If a homosexual couple chose to adopt (as they would so obviously have to), what kind of world is that creating for their child? Who is Mum and who is Dad? If they were to encounter a child from a usual marriage between a man and a woman, would they understand the relationship?

I vote yes.

I think you seriously underestimate children and their level of understanding. Having two dads or two mothers is not confusing for a child, because they have experienced nothing else to compare it with. Plus, countless studies have proven that a child's upbringing is not changed because they have same-sex parents (unless it's the unfortunate situation that others around them make it difficult and harass them).
I'm sure a child who is passed around foster homes annually, or a child who's parents gave them up because they mistakenly got pregnant when they were wasted, or a child who's parents are in jail because they are criminals would all be a lot less confused if they had two parents who loved them and who were there for them. Even if those parents were two men or two women.
You are entitled to your opinion, but it's embarrassing and misinformed.
