Being the #1 fan favorite on the album, the second best track of 2012 according to MTV, and generally the most praised song on the album is "no appeal whatsoever"?

It's rare, but an example is Champagne Showers by LMFAO. It was released as the follow-up to Party Rock Anthem, and flopped almost everywhere in the world. The label didn't even bother releasing it in the US, because of how bad it did everywhere (they just skipped to Sexy and I Know It in the US).

If they were going to release a 6th single for Lady Gaga, it should've been Scheisse imo. I know it's got the "s-word" in multiple times, but so did Hollaback Girl and London Bridge, and they both got #1 and decent radio support. You just need a radio edit which mutes or replaces "scheisse/****".

I don't think it was ever planned as an actual single. When Gaga said "because we're not playing it live yet" she probably was referring to playing it live at the BTW Ball.

In any case, it's absolutely one of my favorite songs by her, but it wouldn't have smashed. It's not commercial enough. The chorus is ridiculously catchy, but the verses and the overall production of the song is just too rough and grungy for 2012 pop radio. It remains a flawless hidden gem.
