Breaking: Car Bombing in Beirut
Quote:
At least eight people have reportedly been killed and 80 wounded by a car bomb in Lebanese capital Beirut.
The rising death toll - following the city's first such attack since 2008 - was reported by Lebanon's state-run National News Agency.
Citing civil defence figures, the agency said the blast in the mainly Christian east Beirut was only 200 yards from the headquarters of the Christian party, the Phalange.
The party is hostile to the regime of President Bashar al Assad in neighbouring Syria, which has been plunged into a civil war that has heightened tensions and divisions in Syria.
But Syrian information minister Omran al Zoabie told reporters: "We condemn this terrorist explosion and all these explosions wherever they happen. Nothing justifies them."
Michael Fish, 25, a British musician visiting Beirut, said he was in his hotel a street away when the explosion happened.
"At first I thought it was an earthquake," he said.
"It shook the whole hotel for a second. I ran down and started filming on my iPhone."
AFP news agency reported that two apartment buildings had been devastated by the bombing in a narrow street off Sassine Square in Ashrafieh. One building was still on fire as Red Cross workers evacuated bloodied casualties.
Balconies were torn off by the force of the blast, windows shattered and cars crushed by falling masonry.
Phalange leader Sami al-Gemayel, a staunch opponent of Mr Assad and a member of parliament, condemned the attack.
"Let the state protect the citizens," he said.
"We will not accept any procrastination in this matter, we cannot continue like that. We have been warning for a year. Enough."
The war in Syria, which has killed 30,000 people in the past 19 months, has pitted mostly Sunni insurgents against Mr Assad, who is from the Alawite sect linked to Shi'ite Islam.
Interior minister Marwan Sharbel was also at the scene of the bombing. The previous such attack in Beirut, in January 2008, killed Lebanon's top anti-terrorism investigator and three other people.
The most high-profile car bombing since Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war took place on February 14, 2005 when a massive blast killed former premier Rafiq Hariri and 22 other people as his motorcade drove along the waterfront.(source)

This happened in my country, its a very sad day today.
But just because we're arab, nobody give a s*** about us.
And the racism that we receive all around the world is absolutely awful and immensly offensive
People need to understand 95% of arabs are just regular people not all of us are awful breaded men who kill others.
SMH to the rest of the world

I agree, and the media (both western + arab) has brought the 5% to the forefront leaving the rest of us to deal with the bullsh*t these idiots do in the name of their skewed idea of religion and what they believe they should fight for. It's greed and power to have control that is causing these rifts in our countries. These f*ckers do their dirty deeds behind closed doors causing deaths, turmoil and suffering that the general public has to put up with! Attention seeking b*tches that don't have the guts to do it in broad day light to stand up for their so called 'ideals'.
I'm arab too, I've been going to lebanon since I was a child. Went to university for a year there (I was in hamra when they huzb allah took it over a few years back) and I still frequent beirut and the mountains and my heart truly goes out to the people there. They're strong people that have endured so much crap at the hands of politics and greed but never lose hope or the will to have their beautiful country restored to its former glory. I feel really bad for what's happening to them right now. This sucks

I live in beirut too, and my university's in hamra too, and it's really sad that when i say to people that i'm lebanese, they automatically picture me as an extremist, when i'm not even muslim to begin with. And the saddest thing is that i KNOW nothing will change after this. Politicians will continue fighting and general security will remain being non existant.

lebanon will never be restored to its former glory unfortunately, people are blind and they will always be blind. Islam (being muslim myself) is NOT about killing everyone who is not muslim.GOD does not want this. God wants us to live in peace together with all other people with different beliefs. Thank God i dont live in the Achrafieh area where it happened but its still a sad thing, and the worse is that we got used to all these bombs its like something regular. Every month or two something like this happens and we always start to fight each other!!!!!! I can't with this anymore

Yeah I know it never changes, and the weird thing is I have friends there that happen to be sunni or shiite or christian and so on. They all care for lebanon more than they do all this ******** these sects are putting them through. With all the sh*t that goes down people still don't care especially the younger generation. They want to live life! They truly have indestructible spirits! 3an jad!!
(I miss bardo! I just want to go for a drink right now! Kii)

That's pretty ignorant since Lebanon has been a really important factor in world politics lately. Anyway, i'm not that surprised since Lebanon is so small on the globe.

Yeah, and the problem is that a lot of people have this pride in their ignorance. When you confront them about it, they're completely with okay with it.

Um, Lebanon has been more famous before all the turmoil for an exotic getaway place + business hub for the wealthy in the western + arab world. Since the 50's + 60's
I was just watching a bette davis movie the nanny (1965) and they name dropped beirut. So, if people don't know thats just ignorance honestly.

It's not the 20th century anymore, but yes, ignorance is correct.
