Lana Del Rey has released an epic 10-minute video for "Ride," her new single off "Born to Die - The Paradise Edition."
"Ride" was directed by Anthony Mandler, who previously worked with Del Rey on the video for "National Anthem" and is a frequent collaborator with Rihanna. Watch the clip above. "The Paradise Edition" is out on Nov. 13.

Lana Del Rey has developed quite a reputation for extravagant music videos (you really don't need any proof beyond "National Anthem"), so it's no surprise that she's projected her new "Ride" single, one of nine bonus cuts on the upcoming Born to Die: Paradise Edition re-release, through an epic 10-minute short film.

Lana Del Rey is almost as recognised for her visuals as she is for her music.
Each clip from the singer seems to become an event.
It's a fittingly epic salute to the singer's breakthrough year. A ten minute cinematic work, 'Ride' features Lana Del Rey acting many roles - although each appears to be trapped in a suffocating relationship.

Lana Del Rey today unveiled a sprawling, cinematic 10-minute video for her new single "Ride." Directed by Anthony Mandler, it's an epic vision of what she says "America used to be," told from the perspective of a character who stumbled across a disconcerting alternate meaning of true freedom.

Lana Del Rey's video for 'Ride' is sad. She plays a hooker who goes home with the Hairy Bikers and talks about being "****ing crazy". She's a good actress; you can see the desire for oblivion and escape in her eyes.
It's not exactly an empowering watch but it's certainly a late entrant for music video of the year.

If this even means anything, LDR herself wrote the video, and Anthony Mandler directed it. It’s a dreamlike, narratively fractured thing where LDR plays some sort of singer/biker chick/hooker character who gets involved with a succession of sketchy older dudes and who may or may not commit murder at some point in the video. Even at its extreme length, it’s a pretty enrapturing thing. Say what you will about Lana Del Rey, but she excels at this part of the game.

Here we have another amibitious piece of cinema from singer and Walt Whitman fanatic Lana Del Rey, for her Born to Die deluxe edition cut "Ride": a ten-minute tribute to discovering true liberation on the open road. The piece, written by Lana and directed by Anthony Mandler, presents LDR as an "unusual" club singer "who belonged to no one, who belonged to everyone," with "an obsession for freedom that terrified me." She spends her time with a pack of sleazy biker guys, smoking and drinking and playing pinball, wearing an American flag and a Native American headdress, throwing pistols around, etc.
The video is introduced and concluded with moving metaphor-laden monologues from Lana about art and America and becoming your true self.

Now, we always knew that Lana was going to go for epic and, with her brand new track 'Ride', she seems to have just about managed it. In contrast to the beauty magnified through the track's build up, the song itself resounds of a melancholy blend of lost hope and irrevocable sadness. With the verses in Del Rey's almost trademark deep, dulcet tones, the choruses soar with the freedom her character seems to gain from the simple pleasure of - doing as her lyrics say - just riding. (Don't get any ideas…)
Couple it all with some beautiful string arrangements and an almost Kate Bush-like bridge and you have a perfect sonic representation of that old crazy mantra of loving life no matter what it throws at you. Not too shabby, LDR.

Grand, sweeping, star narrative that she is. We need Lana Del Rey, we should thank her for that. Lana Del Rey motive implicates all of us. It’s not coincidence that she leans on the American flag imagery so much—she is literally the embodiment of the American dream.

To avoid making another thread, I'll post this tweet here. She's not critic, but hey. LOL
