NORTH RHINE-WESTPHALIA, Germany, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A German high school has decided to do away with homework to help pupils unwind, school officials said.

The homework ban at Elsa-Brandstrom high school in North Rhine-Westphalia came after Germany's high school system cut a year, making school days longer, The Local.de reported.

Head teacher at Elsa-Brandstrom, Brigitte Fontein, told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper Friday that generally "no child would be having their free time dominated by doing school work."

Instead, class time would be used to do more work, as the school has mostly double periods, explained Fontein. Most parents are in favor of the change.

Michael von Tettau, also from the Elsa-Brandstrom, said that for students, "there is barely enough time for sport or to learn a musical instrument," and a 44-hour working week was just too much, he added.

The school will test-run the homework ban for the next two year to see how effective it is, school officials said.

Uhm... It's an interesting idea. And something needs to change over there soon. But I don't get how eliminating homework will help them condense the material into 8 years.

Homework is horrible, in highschool I always felt that I could actually have much more skills with careers I am interested in, and work longer hours on a job, instead of spending hours on things that are to pretty much just keep me busy, and most likely will not help me in life..

Homework is an essential way to male sure students are studying the material.

But if they're able to proof that extensive hours of class are enough (or even more effective) to properly learn, then props to them.

**** homework, i never did that **** in school and I still aced every single test I took, except history, because that subject bored the **** out of me and I couldn't focus, but at least i passed the tests. lol

It will go down. They only way to get good grades is if you practice at home. That's the whole point of homework. Homework is a evaluation if you actually get the **** you learn at school.

I'm mad. Homework in highschool is bs. I learn better with homework, though. My ADHD is terrible in class.

They should experiment with it to see how the test scores turn out.

But homework is pointless especially in some districts in America when the school systems suck ass and usually they let anyone get by just to get by... might work over here (or not). You don't always have to study and do homework in order to pass an exam. I got higher grades than people who studied hard and just suck at taking tests.

But all children learn differently.
