Something like - but "better" than - Facebook would have to emerge for the billion people using it to jump ship.
I think it depends on what they do with it. They have to evolve the site and keep it engaging, but not change it enough to alienate. A major invasion of privacy scandal would certainly get people signing out.
I imagine the next phase of social networking will be about integration. It's already out there to a degree, but a widespread platform profile which incorporates everything into one place without the need to log into different sites/apps. The personality of Facebook, the immediacy of Twitter, the media capabilities of Instagram, the musical access of Spotify, the video access of YouTube, the personalised 'blogging' content of Tumblr and Pinterest, the professional networking of LinkedIn, and the social circles of Google+. It'll essentially be a cyber manifestation of ourselves. Everything in one place.
It'll coincide with technology being an all-in-one device too. Cloud will allow us to have all our music, film, books, images, documents etc. accessed from a click of a button.
