Here's my take.
We don't need to go into what Nicki has accomplished in a short time...I can post my epic legendary stan post but not tonight
I love my Long island lady and Queens queen but
Mariah is an aging diva. Her last hit was 3 years ago and she has had her moment.She's the best singer out there and is a legend. In past generations, the diva thing was tolerated as long as you were really talented or in Madonna's case the HBIC. The newer generation don't care about what you did but rather what have you done lately. They'd rather have a legend be humble and show that the success and all the jazz doesn't phase them. Even the new generation has it's divas (Britney, Beyonce,Gaga, Pink, JLO) but they don't dare go over the top as much as the past divas
Mariah is not getting any younger released a song that came out in July...listeners on radio and GP buyers paid it dust so the album was pushed back to March to use AI as a vehicle to promote. The fact that Mariah clearly states that she usually isn't here for these types of shows (but she'll get paid $18M to be on it) shows that this is just a promotional vehicle.
She has past beef with JLO and liked the idea of taking her place and being paid more (1st season) without knowing who else was doing it. X factor didn't meet her demands so go to Idol.
She found out that Nicki (another female) was going to be on and allegedly hung up the phone. What was more insulting washer rt'ing or posting about getting Lenny kravitz on there. She wants to be the only female that will own the room.
Enters Nicki Minaj who is the it girl of the moment who owns a room, is younger and successful etc. Mariah is a little miffed and insecure so she shades like a true diva; however, everyone isn't going to bow down and deal with disrespect.
So Nicki at least talks to the producers to intervene. One could assume she talked with Mariah the first time but even if she didn't she did attempt to get it done more professionally at first.
Mariah continues to poke the beehive and calls her inadequate...Nicki can do one of three things
a) take it and let it fester...
b) shade her back...
c) school Mimi on the street tactic...
With a) it would build up and build up and Nicki risks the chance of blowing up on live tv and REALLY feeling the wrath
With b) she could easily shade Mariah (who is known for and openly admits watching the charts) about her tepid sales/radio/tour performance of recent. However, she does it enough and then Nicki is deemed not respecting elders/legends and a bully.
c) Tell ha, Clock ha, drag ha. She could do it in a professional way but the risk is that it will cool down and then Mariah would get comfortable again and then poke the beehive and bam the same results as a). Instead, Nicki went Roman from Southside Jamaica Queens. Nicki knows Mimi does not want her on the show and would do what it took to get her off and be the only female. Luckily, Nicki is ratchet enough to go HAM but smart enough to go too far (i.e. actually threaten her life or charge at her). Instead, she checks Mariah and instills fear in Mariah's heart for being disrespectful. This way, Mariah is too scared to come for her. Plan succeeded.
Now Mariah goes on playing the victim and then lowering herself to repeat a hearsay rumor for Barbara Walters to repeat. She is the victim now and because she is a diva of past generations where she was on a pedestal and her snark and jabs were tolerated instead of owning it she has to be woe is me...just like the TRL situation in 01. Mariah is trying to sway the public so that Nicki is off the show and she gets what she wants. However, Nigel put Mimi on blast and told the truth that Nicki never took it that far...on top of that the producers are loving Nicki's critique and Nicki read Mimi talking about an alleged conversation where producers admitted to Mimi's face that Nicki is doing as good as Simon...and she is probably as good as Paula hence Nicki's boring as Fxxx comment.
So, Mariah baited her, Nicki school Mimi and put fear in her heart and Mimi is emotionally uncomfortable to work with someone that won't take her nonsense. The producers back Nicki and Mimi is making a last ditch effort to get GP on her side while also using it to gain more relevance and help her comeback trail.
Once Nicki delivers on AI (ratings and performance) this will be as old as the SH backlash.
Nicki wins in the long run, Mariah wins in this incident and Idol wins by boosting their ratings.
I don't think this was staged but I do think it was inevitable. Now this is how you turn a bad situation into a perfect publicity stunt.
