Sean Garrett has been praised as one of the best R&B songwriters of the past decade, but on Saturday (Sept. 29) in Atlanta, he preferred to take the conversation off of himself. He only wanted to talk about one singer: Brandy.
"The Brandy album is all I'm talking about tonight, That album is nuts. I just feel like... I couldn't believe that people were really ready to discount her as an incredible artist."
Look at how badly black women bash Ciara and Ashanti but love Rihanna… whereas Pink and Britney Spears can keeping music for yrs without having to be the hottest in game, black celebs dont have that same opportunity because of disloyalty and dismissiveness towards anything that isnt hyped up at the moment.
"I just hate that about our generation; we're so quick to dismiss greatness," he stated. "When other people can tour until they're 70 years old and we don't even embrace our people enough to encourage them and lift them up."
Garrett is mainly excited about bringing Brandy's new sound to the masses because he says it's what R&B is in need of these days. He and producer Bangladesh, who crafted the beat for her Chris Brown-assisted "Put It Down," knocked out six songs on the chanteuse's sixth LP, entitled Two Eleven.
"It's amazing," Garrett continued. "I actually keep talking about it but it's really, really dope. If y'all love 'Put It Down,' if y'all love 'Wildest Dream,' just wait."
Sean Garrett ALWAYS over hypes the projects he's working on...and based on Put It Down and Wildest Dreams, I don't hear this new sound Brandy is bringing
I only halfway agree with what he is saying. We (talking about the Black community, specifically American Black) are very loyal to and revere certain people, but, others can be seen as disposable. Sometimes it feels unfair (in the case of the talented like Brandy) and sometimes, it's...appropriate (in the case of the less talented that just lucked up on 15 minutes of fame). I think it really varies depending on who you're talking about. But, in Brandy's case, I agree for the most part, but, I don't agree across the board.
In Brandys case her decline was partly her own doing imo. I still think loads of people were turned off by that whole fake marriage thing and she just never really recovered from that.
