I agree to a certain extent. He could still produce very well vocally. I just think the way his live shows were set up needed to change. I don't think he could sing and dance at the same level anymore.
For example his 30th anniversary shows. He sung the Jackson's set
Live then lipped the solo part. He also didn't sound half bad during the Jacksons set and he was probably at about 60-70% performance wise

he might've been iconic back then but up until he died no one was checking for him.
and once the radios started playing his music nonstop for a month i learned that almost every song sounds the same
