Based on the thread about Freddie vs MJ, many seem to find MJ overrated??

So my question is what makes him overrated??
Or what about him is overrated??

He doesn't have the greatest melodies. I mean he a lot of good ones, but a lot of songs that aren't so great too.

Saying he's overrated doesn't necessarily mean his music is bad or anything, it just means that people tend to grossly exaggerate how good it is, especially after his death.

I think his music is a bit overrated but everything else he does DESERVES the praise.

I'm not a big MJ fan, but I'd never call him over rated. The man was undeniably talented.

I'm a huge MJ fan and the only thing that would be a legitimate criticism is that his voice deteriorated pretty rapidly after Bad, hence why he relied on lipsyncing as his career went on (as many others in his time did too). He's a music genius, a very good lyricist, and an amazing dancer. He may be "overrated" because of his relatively recent death, but for the most part he deserves all the praise he gets. People tend to focus on his personal life and issues, unfortunately, and I think it changes their perception of him and, by extension, his music and success.

His music is just bad..

He is king of pop, his music is revolutionary, his videos groundbreaking, his moves iconic, his presence on earth holy, and his death heart shattering.

He is not overrated, if anything he deserves more praise for what he's done for pop culture and music.

i could name a hand full of guys off the top of my head with better voices.
and it's 2012, no one cares if you can dance anymore. so people using that as validation for his status are just reaching.
until he died i had literally heard like maybe 3 of his songs tops.
he might've been iconic back then but up until he died no one was checking for him.
and once the radios started playing his music nonstop for a month i learned that almost every song sounds the same

He is underrated if anything.

I could go line by line but it's too much effort. I'll just say that Michael was more iconic than any of our faves, and just because you weren't born when he was slaying does not mean it never happened. He does not have the best selling album of all time for no reason.

Let's not start this debate again.

Nothing. People are just mad that he's a better lyricist, better vocalist, better producer and better performer than their fave.

He has more (vocal) range than most pop singers, his pitch was perfect, his voice was agile and he could use his voice in shape he wanted. Rock, R&B, etc. Not to mention his fantastic staccato approach to some of his songs.

His song writing was truly what you'd call "deep". He had insight and was more than aware of people's opinions of him.

The production on all of his albums was better than most. Not only did he successfully mix genres, but he created a new one. Contemporary R&B does not exist without MJ.

His performances are still unmatched (Bad Tour was his peak). He was perfect on stage. His footwork, his voice, everything.

Funny how a bunch of teens who listen to the likes of Katy Perry feel comfortable calling one of the most critically acclaimed performers/artists in history, overrated.

Of course no one was checking for him. That's why he sold out out 50 dates at one venue within 60 minutes 10 years after his last album.

He was a genius, purely original, music amazingly written, astonishing beats, iconic figure, a hell of a performer, great singer.

IMO Madonna is overrated, I´m wondering if she is able to write a song by herself. Lots of co writers and producers.
