absolutely. i don't think it's fair to use such words since an artist's talent and success may sometimes be subjective

Yes, some of the girls on this site need to realize that success doesn't make you a legend
a Factual example is Mariah Carey who sold tons of records and has 18 US # 1 singles
but the GENERAL PUBLIC does see her as a "Living Legend"
Legendary artist like Aretha Franklin, Prince, Micheal Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Elvis
didn't rely on record sales, gimmicks or #1 singles to make them legendary
their talent, creativity, impact on others is what made them a Legend in the industry

I'm sorry but is this person putting Xtina amongst Prince.. and MJ.. My soul weeps.
I agree on the point that commercial success does not make you a legend.. half the battle of being a legend or icon is longevity.. the rest is improving as an artist vocally, sonically etc..

Personally I think the words Legendary and Iconic are too loosely used. Are they great honors to have bestowed upon someone?? YES!! But unfortunately the title doesn't fit everyone.
I would say legendary acts are people like MJ, Beatles and Elvis. Their success and impact on the industry is unparalleled. They have changed the industry in so many ways during their time, evryone else falls short.
Icons are people like Whitney, Madonna, Prince, Janet, The Supremes, Rolling Stones(could be in the legendary group), Little Richard, Temptations, Aretha Franklin(could be in the legendary group), Ike and Tina(could be in the legendary group), Tupac, Biggie, Queen, etc, etc. Basically people who has had profound impacts during their time period and you can still see their marks today.
Just because you had a few hits or were the 'it girl, boy or band" of your time, DOESNT make you iconic.
Do you guys agree??

If he wasn't a Christina stan, I would agree with you, HOWEVER Christina was definitely influenced by Mariah and Whitney (Celine too) more than Madonna, she's said this herself. +Etta James.
To chanel: Only the word, "legend" is overused, not icon (iconic however ) I think the girls have a good grasp on what an icon is.
Also, chanel, I would be more inclined to agree with you on the Madonna thing if you were talking about whether the average person/GP views her as a legend, but since you are talking about overall and in the grand scheme of things, I can't agree with you.
You might not really like it, but Madge is a legend.

A legend has global recognition and acclaim from fans and critics alike. They also have memorable songs, videos, performances, & an impressive discography and iconography. Some people on this site seem to forget that in order to be a legend the first thing you need to possess is talent.
Btw, I do think Xtina is a legend. This generation of legends is only 1/2 as good as the last generation's but its kind of undeniable that Britney, Xtina, and Beyonce are the legends/icons of our time.

Sorry you'd have to be either crazy or very ignorant to not consider Madonna a living legend. I have not a shred of doubt that history will remember her to be the greatest female entertainer that ever lived. Really, nobody else even comes close to her global impact and influence. And her music legacy is pretty magnificent too.

Maybe currently but what these girls are doing today still doesn't hold up to the all time list. Check those out and check how many women you see.
Not many
