It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that more Americans than ever now own tablets, but if you'd ever wanted some quantifiable data to go along with that homespun wisdom, then the Pew Research Center is glad to help. According to its latest report, 22 percent of US adults now own a tablet of some form. While the iPad remains the dominant player in the space with a 52 percent market share, this figure starkly contrasts the 81 percent share that Pew reported in 2011. As you might expect, Android tablets have made significant inroads and now account for 48 percent of the overall tablet space. Leading the Android charge is the Kindle Fire, which alone accounts for 21 percent of all tablets sold. It's worth pointing out that Pew's survey was conducted before the release of either the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD, which means that even the most recent information is a bit behind the curve. You'll find a press release after the break that provides a much broader take on Pew's latest findings in the mobile space, but those who want to go straight to the meat should hit up the source link below.
It's nice to see the competition is gearing up. I think this is the reason why Apple decided to make an iPad Mini. Competition is always a good thing.
In before Apple only sells 1 product versus many of Androids blah blah. We're not talking about the sales of different products but the Operating System itself.
Not surprising considering the cheapest iPad is $500 and most people can't afford that. Once the iPad Mini comes Apple will push the percentage back in their favor

Let's see if they stay on top with the iPad mini. I must say that the Kindle Fire really looks GORGEOUS. I hate tablets but the Kindle Fire makes me want to buy one since it's cheap and looks amazing.

I doubt Apple gets the percentage in their favor anytime soon, considering the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD weren't even released when this was made and they have been BIG.
Why else do you think Apple is releasing an Ipad mini this holiday season.. they are starting to realize that people are here for Hardware and functionality and not just an expensive pretty itunes hub.
I've been lusting after the Asus Transformer, but now I'm waiting to see what the Windows Surface tablets will be like.
Yes this! I havent been excited about windows in a while but this surface by window may shake the tablet market this holiday season, its just sooooo sexy and its windows! that means flexibility and no restrictions or Apple-bias/ mandates.
And the iPad 3 was released in most countries during the last month of the 1st quarter and most of the 2nd quarter so of course sales would really increase.
I actually bought a Google nexus 7 last week and I'm on it now. I love it, I think I've been converted from iOS to android lol this is just a much more comfortable OS to use imo
