You wanted some "proof" earlier so here is an article from The New Yorker by Malcom Gladwell:
http://www.gladwell.com/2006/2006_10_16_a_formula.html in 2006 that details computers being able to predict the hit-worthiness of movies and songs. Anything above a 700 is considered "hit-worthy"
To be frank, if a number of songs score above hit level, or if most songs are just below it, it's tough to tell. Most of the Born This Way songs scored around the same range so they had a lot of leeway with choices. The rest is left to human discernment.
