Windowing is not coming from record labels, which have every incentive to maximize the economic return on their investment for each individual record that they release.

I think all this has to be kept in perspective. These are rare cases right now. I know a lot of ink gets spilled when a band like Coldplay withholds a record. But these are still rare instances. The overwhelming number of records that are released every week are available on our service. That includes records that shoot to No. 1. Some managers and artists who are keen to work with us actually start streaming before the street date.

Hopefully, this list will keep track of famous/well-known releases (albums and singles) that are withheld from Spotify. Just want to see how common this is among the "top releases." Feel free to add to the list any that you have found.

This means that some labels aren't putting new music on Spotify, right? I've noticed some songs not getting put on

it's so annoying because then I need to download the song, go through local files, etc...

Billboard Hot 100 Formula is pretty close to the following:

200,000 sales = 200 * 1 points = 200 points
100 million airplay = 100 * 1.5 points = 150 points
750,000 on-demand stream = 750 * 0.1 points = 75 points

Withholding from Spotify, Rhapsody, Muve Music, Rdio and MOG means the song has to sell a lot of downloads in order to make up the lack of streaming. (for example 750,000 on-demand streaming = 75,000 of sales).

This makes WANEGBT's chart performance even more impressive, not leaving the Top 2 for 6 (??) weeks without streaming.

I don't see it on Spotify...

I don't use ITunes and withholding these songs won't make me buy the song...I just won't listen to that artists music

It is annoying that the labels are doing this though. When Youtube has the same thing, it's not getting me to buy the songs on iTunes anyway.

I have it as a local file ("Diamonds"), and I can now go to a singles page for it, so that means it's coming soon, or is available in some countries. And Taylor is still charting in the top 10 worldwide with WANEGBT, despite not being in the U.S. store

Not really. They are withholding streaming so that more people will buy the song. So if anything she had an advantage of more people buying her song.

********. Streaming does not affect sales that much. When WANEGBT went to UK Spotify it did not do anything to her sales.

Label´s delusional greed robbed Taylor 2 weeks at Hot100 nr1.
