Singer Danny K's parents had their car stolen at gunpoint inside their Johannesburg complex this week, said his mother Pam Koppel, who is also his manager.
The couple had gone to dinner at a restaurant in Melrose Arch ahead of a busy weekend of shows for Danny K, the rhythm and blues artist.
They had just arrived at the complex gates when the singer's father, Gavin Koppel, looked at the security guard and realised something was wrong.
He put his foot down, speeding into the central courtyard, she said.
Four robbers surrounded them and pointed firearms at the Koppels and two of the complex security guards, one of whom was armed.
"They shouted 'give us your jewellery' and asked how many people were in the house."
They kept saying "I'll shoot you, I'll shoot you," said Mrs Koppel who believes they were followed from the restaurant.
Meanwhile, a neighbour arrived and tried to reverse away but crashed, she said.
The robbers grabbed the Koppels' cellphones and the jewellery they were wearing and sped off in the hijacked vehicle.
"All you can think is, 'thank God we weren't hurt'," said Mrs Koppel.
The police were called and Netstar tracking was activated and the vehicle was later recovered.
"I must say, the police were excellent. We phoned 10111 and they were here pretty quick. We heard the Netstar helicopters after about 10 minutes."
"Danny is very upset about it. He's concerned about the high crime rate in South Africa," his mother said.
He has joined You and Huisgenoot magazines' forum against crime and he and fellow artist Kabelo are planning to go on a trip to Mount Everest to highlight the crime rate in South Africa.
After the weekend Danny K's parents plan to attend counselling sessions to help them deal with the severe shock that followed their being held at gunpoint and robbed by the intruders. - Sapa
