Universal Giving Away $15 Million in Movie Tickets

LOS ANGELES -- Universal Pictures has come up with an unusual plan to try to fill theaters when its film "Peaceful Warrior" opens later this month: The company is giving away $15 million worth of free tickets.

Through a partnership with Best Buy, the film company will give interested moviegoers as many as 10 free tickets to see "Peaceful Warrior" during its opening weekend, March 30 to April 1, Universal's president of marketing, Adam Fogelson, announced Tuesday.

The inspirational film, based on Dan Millman's best-selling novel, "Way of the Peaceful Warrior," doesn't lend itself to traditional promotional techniques, Fogelson said.

"We wanted to allow consumers a chance to sample the film and opted to redirect money from a traditional marketing campaign and instead purchase and provide tickets to moviegoers directly," he said. "This truly is an example of an offer with no strings attached."

The hope is that viewers'"word of mouth and enthusiasm might sustain interest" in the film, he said.

The film came out last year in limited release.

Tickets are available online now, with the giveaway ending April 1.

EDIT: I just got 2 tickets to one location, which I could potentially give away, then another 4 tickets which is someplace near a couple of my friends.

Saw this, was expecting something terribly cliched/formulatic, and I quite liked it.

It sucks that this will be a financial/critic flop.

It wasn't expected to break into the top 3. Then again, being realistic, how could it between 300, Meet the Robinsons, and Blades of Glory in conjunction to giving free tickets away?
But it was a mostly failed promotion technique.

It'll break into a million, then I see another million at least for DVD sales/rentals.

I don't understand this. Do you go online and get a free ticket? Besides...the promotion is over isn't it? Why would it give away 15 million in movie tickets if they weren't going to get it back?

The reason this movie gave away free tickets was because it was released in June 2006 in a limited release. This release was a moderately wide release, and since the film was so old, they wanted to gain a public interest. I was interseted, so I went to see it on April 1, as well as Blades of Glory and Dead Silence. Peaceful Warrior was my least favorite of the three, but BOG and PW were B movies, while Dead Silence is my favorite movie of the year so far at an A.
