If this was shade it wasn't rational, because we have snow plows, that can plow the ash to clear the roads, dump it into giant piles. Shovels, etc, heavy machinery, just don't let it accumulate on roofs of homes and buildings or they'll collapse, which would mean we'd have to sweet the roofs off, but other than that, it's very plausible to contain things.

The problem isn't so much that it would accumulate but that enough ash and debris in the atmosphere = bad air and the blocking of sunlight.
Even with air filtration procedures and masks the air would still be deadly. Also I believe that the ash also keeps heat in so temperatures would rise.
If one erupted humanity would be screwed In fact probably all life would be. Because all that ash would not only cause the worlds temperatures to plunge, but would also kill all the producers (autotrophic species like plants) of the world. If they go, we have no food, unless man can invent a way to get energy to the body without getting it from food. The human body converts 90% of food into energy. The other 10% may be stored as fat maybe. Mass extinction would be inevitable whether we want to accept the possibility or not. I can honestly see all humans pitted against each other in a fight for survival just like other animals. Kumbayah will be thrown to wind if such a horrid slap from reality should hit us.
I could imagine a few species to survive though, like grasses and some fungi.

The best thing we could do is live underground or in caves tbh. Even with the technologies we have we aren't THAT prepared for something like this. The same goes for asteroids that could bring on the same effects. I'm sure we have some provisions in place but not nearly enough to actually do any significant help.

I'm not saying we could save everyone, but I'm saying all however many billion of us, wouldn't die out to 5,000 remaining.
