Michael's legacy isn't something that can be measured by how many #1 singles he scored from one album. It's not something that can be gauged numerically. There's no way to mathematically measure how many girls screamed and fainted at the mere sight of him, how many lives he changed with his soothing voice and deft footwork, how he appealed to almost every conceivable demographic, or how everything about him from the thriller dance to the moonwalk to the shiny white glove has become a permanent part of American popular culture.
I mean, you want to talk about "iconic", talk about Michael. EVERYONE has seen the Thriller video. EVERYONE can recognize the moonwalk. EVERYONE will know who you're trying to imitate if you spontaneously shout, "Sha-mon" or "WEE-HEE!"
Katy Perry's impact on popular culture has been considerably less significant than people on here make it out to be. I guess you could call the California Gurls or Firework videos iconic to some extent, but if I asked one of the guys living with me right now to describe the E.T. or Teenage Dream video, I'd probably just get a blank stare. Granted, I live with a bunch of engineers, but still...
And this has already been mentioned, but she can't compete with MJ when it comes to performing ability. Whereas Michael practically owned the stage as soon as he stepped onto it, Katy... doesn't. Go ahead and report me for this, but from what I've seen, Katy's live performances SUCK. She can't sing live, she's an awkward dancer, and half the time she's got this deer-in-the-headlights expression frozen on her face. Katy's good at a lot of things, but performing live isn't one of them.
So, yeah. In conclusion, there probably will never be another Michael Jackson in our lifetimes, and it's certainly not going to be Katy Perry.
