Producers are said to be keen to do whatever it takes to improve ratings, after the show experienced its lowest launch since 2006.

Viewing figures for the ninth series of the talent contest are down 3 million on last year, and insiders have said that as well as pushing the 2013 series launch back a month, the team are considering bringing guest judge Mel B back to the panel as a permanent replacement for Scherzinger.

"It maybe airs a little early and people struggle when they might be on holiday or enjoying the sunshine at home," the source said.

"The guest judges just don't work. It's great for audiences who are watching live but it doesn't translate well on the telly.

"People get confused as the lineup's always changing from song to song."

In the meantime, producers are said to be hoping that the end of the Paralympics and the start of the Boot Camp and Judges' Houses rounds - including Cheryl Cole's return as Gary Barlow's guest mentor - will draw in bigger audiences.

Cole was clear to point out that her appearance, filmed earlier this month, took place as a favour to Barlow and wasn't a marketing ploy devised by Cowell.

"I saw Simon's tweet," she is quoted as saying. "I'm not doing this for him. I am doing this for Gary as he's my friend and he asked me to do it." (source)

The producers seems to be the lowest forms of life, Nicole basically one most of the online polls, the comments on facebook and twitter are in favour of Nicole. Yet the push Mel B the moment Nicole was chosen as permanent judge. It is all a mess. Mel B is not sympatic, she is just grumpy, she sits there and looks like she just is there for the money and doesn't cares about the talent. It seems they want to recreate the "Simon Figure" with Mel B, but Simon has some kind of charisma, while Mel B is just not so likeable imo. Gary and Tulisa also seems to speak their minds and now how to use their minds, Nicole really seems to be a more stable and better fit overall. But yeah the producers of the XFactor don't really care....

This was OBVIOUS. The media have been giving Nicole such a wet reception. They ain't here for her at all. They keep requesting Mel to replace her! Mel would be an amazing permanent judge

Sis, she's been on the audition episodes for like 5 minutes throughout the last 6 episodes. Her interactions and comments are stale as **** hence why Mel B has been slaying the coverage. She's been on every damn episode for more than 30 minutes each time. It feels as though Mel B is the permanent judge this year and Nicole stepped in for 2 seconds. Nicole has been the most boring judge, and the media states it that way also.

Mel B got at least 2 auditions per episode though. Nicole's been missing for 3 episodes already.

I don't think we've seen enough of Nicole to make a decision yet.
