The NHL Lockout 4.0 | Agreement reached!
If an agreement between the NHL and NHLPA is not reached by Midnight ET tomorrow, then for the third time in less then 20 years the NHL will lockout its players.
The NHL has previously locked out it's player for the first half of the 1994-95 season, and the lockout of the 2004-05 season which killed the entire season.
I am not here for another lockout.
This will be the thread for the 4 hockey fans on this site to discuss / have our meltdowns over the impending lockout.
---
AGREEMENT REACHED!
Quote:
After 113 days and a 16-hour negotiation marathon that wrapped up at 5am et on Sunday morning, a tentative deal on a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement has been reached between the National Hockey League and NHL Players' Association.
"Don Fehr and I are here to tell you that we have reached an agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed to reporters early Sunday morning. "We have to dot a lot of I's and cross a lot of T's. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the basic framework has been agreed upon."

If another lockout occurs, then it would be a disservice to hockey fans if Gary Bettman remains commissioner. It's not a coincidence that the NHL may be locked out three times in twenty years WITH HIM IN CHARGE.

I can't believe this is happening again.
They are lucky ESPN still shows hockey highlights at this point.

There's already fans planning to protest by cancelling their hockey tv packages, their season tickets. Another lockout will hurt the NHL. Espcially the already struggling markets (Phoenix, Columbus.)
But he will remain commissioner as long as the owners are happy with him, and they are.

Welp...it's past midnight. The lockout has begun.
Hey, if nothing else, basketball will have sole control over the headlines during the period after the Super Bowl up until MLB opening day.

This better be resolved within the next few weeks, I do not want even half the season to be gone.

It better be worked out for sure. It took them so long to recover from the last lockout...now the league is on the verge of reaching new heights and they're gonna allow this to happen? Give me a break.

The NHL issued a message to its fans today:
Quote:
Despite the expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the National Hockey League has been, and remains, committed to negotiating around the clock to reach a new CBA that is fair to the Players and to the 30 NHL teams.
Thanks to the conditions fostered by seven seasons under the previous CBA, competitive balance has created arguably the most meaningful regular season in pro sports; a different team has won the Stanley Cup every year; fans and sponsors have agreed the game is at its best, and the League has generated remarkable growth and momentum. While our last CBA negotiation resulted in a seismic change in the League's economic system, and produced corresponding on-ice benefits, our current negotiation is focused on a fairer and more sustainable division of revenues with the Players -- as well as other necessary adjustments consistent with the objectives of the economic system we developed jointly with the NHL Players' Association seven years ago. Those adjustments are attainable through sensible, focused negotiation -- not through rhetoric.
This is a time of year for all attention to be focused on the ice, not on a meeting room. The League, the Clubs and the Players all have a stake in resolving our bargaining issues appropriately and getting the puck dropped as soon as possible. We owe it to each other, to the game and, most of all, to the fans.

I spotted the lies. Working around the clock? Bitch... you didn't even try to work something else on the last 2 days before it expired. Also there was very little effort to even avoid a lockout.... I'm fuming right now.

They just need to scrap the NHL completely, start over with two 8-team conferences, one in the U.S., the other in Canada, and have the top four teams in each make the playoffs. Does Tampa Bay and the Carolinas really need hockey?

There's two teams in Florida.
That idea could work?

Goodbye 2012-2013 season.
I've kind of lost hope that a deal will be reached in time to save the season. Been watching WHL/CHL hockey lately.

Good news: The NHL lockout has ended this morning.
CBC.ca:
Quote:
After months of being locked in a labour stalemate, the National Hockey League and its players are finally ready to get back to work.
Early on Sunday morning — day 113 of the lockout — NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed from New York the two sides had reached a tentative agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement that will finally spark the beginning of the 2012-13 NHL season.
Details of the new CBA were not immediately available, and Bettman cautioned they still needed to be ironed out fully.
"We have reached an agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper," Bettman told a news conference. "We've got to dot a lot of i's and cross a lot of t's. There's still a lot of work to be done but the basic framework of the deal has been agreed upon."
There was no official word on when training camps could begin or when the regular season was slated to kick off — or how many games will be played — but it has been reported the Stanley Cup playoffs would end in late June
However, according to Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman the sides settled on a seven-year maximum term for free agents (eight if the team is re-signing its own free agent). Friedman also reported the deal is for 10 years with an opt-out after eight, and that the NHL came up from its original salary cap demands, from $60 million US to $63.4 million. The floor next season will reportedly be $44 million.
On variance, according to Friedman, they agreed that the lowest-paid season of any multi-year deal can be no lower than 50 per cent of the highest season. The sides both agreed to split up hockey-related revenue 50/50 for the duration of the 10 years.
The Canadian Press also reported each team can use up to two compliance buyouts prior to the 2013-14 season, which will count against the players' share of hockey-related revenue.
Those hoping to see their favourite NHL players make the trip to the 2014 Sochi Olympics to compete will have to wait a while to find out. Friedman tweeted that their participation will be negotiated separately, while he says re-alignment also remains unsettled.
The majority of both the NHL's 30-member Board of Governors and NHL players still need to ratify the agreement.

Gary Bettman, however, needs to step down.
