In addition to what Travis said, there are rules in certain parts of this forum that specifically concern bumping.
In the Game Cube forum, it is recommended that you "bump" only if your thread is on/past the second page or if it has been more than 12 hours since the last post.
Some bump to update threads while others do it just to draw attention to the thread, especially when they asked about something that no one has replied to.
It is usually a good idea not to bump extremely old threads and to not use it as a way of increasing your post count.
