Why did it take you so long to level up!? Its actually faster to level up in this game because everyone trades pokemon together and traded pokemon gain boosted EXP, I started playing like 2 days ago and I'm already at lt.surge's gym! They just updated it today too, so maybe some of the glitches you were experiencing got fixed.
The one thing that does bother the hell out of me though is that you don't gain any EXP from battling other players online. You only gain EXP from battling wild pokemon and trainers in the game- not any of the battles with real people.
