It could be argued that Madonna had already done that with Justify My Love though. She didn't really need Erotica to be more sex filled. The album itself isn't even really about sex or that overtly sexual, it's much more then just a sex album but that is all people know it as because of Madonna's own desires to make it so. She was already thought to be a sexual icon before Erotica. She was already seen to be a woman who was sexually liberated before Erotica. Erotica didn't do anything but put a negative spin on what was once positive. She had tons of support with songs like Express Yourself which were more feminism oriented and more empowering in nature both sexually and other wise.

This doesn't really mean anything. Her career was off the rails during Erotica and that's can't be argued.

Just because she was more composed doesn't mean that her career wasn't disintegrating infront of her eyes. She was one step away from pulling a Sinade O'Connor and she knew it. That Letterman airing was just the tipping point where it became apparent to everyone that she had lost it. Even she knew that she had pushed too far, which is why she receded from going further with it and basically made three apology albums to show that " ***** Madonna" was over.
