The Higher "Our Movie Rules"
Death From Above 1979 "Romantic Rights"
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus "In Fate's Hands"
Arctic Monkeys "Brianstorm"
Nine Inch Nails "Survivalism"
Not a bad day for my NCAA picks, considering how first days go. Didn't go perfectly, but I didn't lose any Elite Eight teams like Ben, so it's a good day.
Day off work tomorrow will probably be spent watching the tournament and playing XBox 360 instead of going out and, at the very least, doing my laundry. I just don't FEEL like it.
How's everyone around here feel about mashups? I mean, I LOVE them. But have they caught on in the Popfusion pop culture mainstream?
Ooh, Romantic Rights, Brianstorm, and Survivalism ^_^ Romantic Rights had me convinced to get more stuff from DFA1987, haha.
Heck yes to not doing much ^_^!
I like good mash-ups, how about that? That makes me sound weird. I like mash-ups but when the two songs seem... equally mashed, if that makes any sense. I wish I remembered that one site you posted in the chat once for mash-ups, because I recently did want to check out more mash-ups. I am hoping/assuming you will be mentioning some you like?
Mash-ups...hmmm...
I like the Korn / Cure mash-up of "Make Me Bad" and "In Between Days". Other than that, haven't actually heard much of any others [believe it or not].
Brianstorm is INSANE. And i'm pretty sure people know how I feel about "Survivalism" by now.
I had a pretty rough first day, but I haven't lost any S16 teams. Yet.
I think mash-ups can be good if the right people are doing the mash-ups, not some random people off of the street who get the "brilliant" idea to mash-up two of their favorite songs. Look at "Lose My Freedom", for instance. It actually helped me appreciate "Lose My Breath" a bid.
This leaves Rock This Town, Psychobilly Freakout, Beast and the Harlot, and Institutionalized as songs left to five-star before I am declared a Guitar God and given The Log(!!!)
Rock This Town will be difficult, Psychobilly Freakout will take a LOT of work, Beast and the Harlot might be mostly about getting lucky and getting a good run, and Institutionalized is just ridiculous.
I think I'll get Beast and the Harlot, Rock This Town, Psychobilly Freakout, and round it out with Institutionalized to get my Log. But that's a long-term goal.
Songs I'm feeling at the moment:
My Chemical Romance "Heaven Help Us" - The beginning of this song is very Muse-like, and I can definitely appreciate that.
Wax Audio "Hallowed Be Thy Enemy (Public Enemy vs. Iron Maiden)" - More on this below.
TV on the Radio "Satellite"
The Strokes "Heart in a Cage" (again)
Fall Out Boy "Thriller"
Maryland was the only Sweet 16 team lost today, which makes it a GREAT day. My outlook for tomorrow is a little more cloudy, however; Virginia Tech, Virginia and Wisconsin will definitely have me on my toes tomorrow.
Anyway, about mashups. I agree with the idea that the right mashup can be something of greatness. "Boulevard of Broken Songs" is a great example of this, as it not only exposed how close "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wonderwall" were to each other, but it also made for some awesome music. In fact, the entire Dean Gray album is pretty fantastic, and an example of what bootleg artists can do at their best.
"Hallowed Be Thy Enemy," for example, is a combination of "Public Enemy No. 1" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name," two songs from two polar opposite bands that shouldn't really work. But PE raps over the beginning of the "Hallowed" backing track, and once the song kicks in, it doesn't sound like a mashup--it sounds like Public Enemy is honestly sampling the track, as the raps flow easily over the soaring riff.
I lost both Maryland and VCU yesterday, and both were winnable, which makes it so much worse. Today is going to be even more rough for me, because I have a lot of lower seeds winning today when there hasn't been much of that this year. I'm crossing my fingers.
And isn't Institutionalized a BITCH on GHII? I honestly think it laughs at me when i'm not looking.
Once again, good list of songs, though I have yet to check out the mash-up.
"Boulevard of Broken Songs!" I forgot that as a great mash-up. Thanks for mentioning that.
lmao @ BOOTIE top 10. Definitely gotta check some of those mash-ups...
Timbaland Presents Shock Value: an early dark horse for best album of 2007? While the Modest Mice and the Shins of the indie darling scene will likely scoop up nominations left and right, in my opinion Shock Value is the best concept--who didn't see this idea and think that this was going to take off? If the video for "Give It To Me" ruins this album's chances in stores, I will **** a brick. The album is FAR too good--especially considering mainstream standards; I'm looking at you MIMS--for one video to ruin it. Trust me, if the people aren't loving this yet, put out this track. Hell, put out "Apologize," "Scream," it's bound to be a hit. Timbaland is the ****.
The Shins - Phantom Limb
Speaking of The Shins, I heard this song at Target on Channel RED. The chorus hooked me, but I was let down by the verses when I heard the song--they're tolerable, but it's all about the chorus. Beautiful. Kinda makes me want to see Garden State.
Cobra Starship - Billie Jean
Fun little cover of MJ's hit. Cobra Starship won't set the music world on fire, but they can at least provide a little brightness to an otherwise glum music scene.
No More Kings - Sweep The Leg
Long video, but it's worth it, especially if you're a fan of The Karate Kid. Quite the pop-rock song, as well.
Faith No More - Introduce Yourself
No reliable video for this one, but check it out on iTunes. Can't go wrong with Faith No More, eh?
God of War II is FANTASTIC. I've had my roommates and friends stop by for the past few days that I've been playing it, amazed by what they are seeing in this game. The PS2 still has a lot going for it, and this is proof.
NCAA Tournament bracket is still alive, but I can only win this here Popfusion pool if two scenarios happen:
UCLA/Georgetown advance to the championship and UCLA wins the championship
Florida/Georgetown advance to the championship; the champion doesn't matter.
That's it. Any other combination of championship teams or the winner of the championship and I don't win. Kinda sad. But I still have a fighting chance.
In fact, only thisisabracket, Block Rockin' Beats Man, The Fresh Fighters, kermit and his joint and myself even have a chance to win anymore. Time to separate the men from the boys.
Ooh, I knew almost half of the songs! (Timbaland and Shins) The rest, good list, although I had no idea that Cobra Starship even covered Billy Jean. What a surprise, and a pleasant one too!
Thanks for taking the time to find videos / embedded files for the songs.
A good song from a band that I hadn't heard of until my roommate introduced me to them. They released a new album this year that wasn't so good, but this song is awfully freakin' sweet, and the fan-created video isn't too shabby either.
Our Lady Peace "Not Enough"
Sweet song that WWE used for a short time to pimp Jeff Hardy in the above video. One of the few songs that WWE has pimped that is actually above average.
The Used "The Bird and the Worm"
3: The current number of Used songs that I like. Very overproduced, which, in this case, is a very good thing as it accentuates Bert McCracken's vocals, simultaneously making it more accessible. I wouldn't say that they've sold out by any means, but it might get some rock radio play, if that's the topic. Possible candidate for 2007 Hook of the Year.
The Living End "Into The Red"
Fantastic song from State of Emergency, released in 2006. No reliable video.
That's all I really got. Back to Guitar Hero 360 for me.
The electronica side project of AFI lead Davey Havok and guitarist Jade Puget has produced this first single, which evokes visions of Depeche Mode to me. This is some really good stuff, I look forward to more material from Davey and Jade.
Arctic Monkeys ft. Dizzee Rascal "Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend"
B-side on the single to "Brianstorm," this song isn't too bad itself even though it won't make it to Favourite Worst Nightmare when it hits later this month. Dizzee Rascal's contribution is somewhat weak considering his field of work, but fits in the song nonetheless. My apologies for the DJs talking over this.
Phil Collins "Another Day In Paradise"
This video really should be outdated by now, but the homelessness problem still plagues us around the world, not to mention the overbearing poverty, so this video is still as meaningful as it was at the tail end of 1989 when it was first released. And the only thing sadder than this video is how well it still portrays the state of the world today.
The former is a cover that has been performed live several times by the two-piece prior to this studio recording appearing on their MySpace, the latter is one that you might have heard before, but check out this mashup that actually syncs it to Britney's voice. Excellent stuff on both accounts.
Tiger Army "Sea of Fire"
No reliable link, but if you haven't heard of this band, check them out, their lead singer often contributes to AFI's work in several ways, but Tiger Army themselves are a fantastic psychobilly group.
As far as Don Imus goes, all that really needs to be said is that while his presence will likely be forgotten within a few months, he really did get the shaft. While Michael Richards definitely got what he deserved, it could be argued that Imus probably would've been alright if he hadn't picked on someone as defenseless as the Rutgers' women basketball team, and if he didn't already have a history of saying stupid things like this.
Now, speaking of history, let's see if it repeats itself and hip-hop/rap gets a free pass even after Sharpton and Jackson begin their crusade to clean up the rap game. Good luck with that.
I don't know, I think people are overreacting. While it definitely has some ******** statements(the one that stuck out the most to me was "despondent leftism"), they didn't come out and say "We're happy that he's dead! HOORAY!" I think this was more of a bad attempt of capturing Vonnegut's humor in an obituary, myself.
