Great win by Robson, I thought she might wilt after Li nabbed the tiebreak and then there was that controversial call against her at 2-2 in the 3rd when the ball was clearly in. However she showed great mental strength to keep calm and get the break anyway. She really kept Li pinned back for most of the match and rarely allowed her to produce any winners. If only she can improve her first serve percentage she will be a really top player (as when she gets that serve in it is lethal).
I've been watching tennis for 15 yrs and this is the best run of performances I've seen by a British woman (very little to choose from admittedly). A few relevant stats:
- Robson is the first British woman since 1998 to reach the Round of 16 at any slam (Sam Smith @ Wimbledon)
- Robson is the first British woman since 1998 to defeat a Top Ten ranked opponent in a slam (Sam Smith bt. Conchita Martinez at Wimbledon)
- Robson is the first British woman since 1991 to reach the Round of 16 at the US Open (Jo Durie the last)
Well, that Sharapova slaughter was rough, but congrats to Mallory for making it to the third round of the US Open! Stanford tennis should be very proud.
You sure? I feel like the American sports media loves Serena (because she brings the ratings, obviously), but the tennis establishment? Ehh...idk.
Don't know [or care ] about the international media.
Well Serena has gotten a lot of bad wrap over the media but I still feel like if she were to retire, America would lose one of the best sports players in their history so she would be revered. I know they always give her a hard time because of the controversy she gets herself in to , but she should be able to get some good press in the tennis world tbh

I guess Venus will be the litmus test, because her time isn't far off.

But I feel like the media always treated Venus' name better as a respectable person than Serena tbh. She could be the test, but I wouldn't put too much emphasis on her, Serena has always been the controversial sister

True. Venus has a pretty safe persona, the ultimate stateswoman (and let's be real, not as accomplished. We all know that in sports the better you are, the more you're hated). They're still grouped together often enough, though.
