Utah NBC refusing to air a new TV show about a gay family.
Quote:
We live in a country where our personal freedoms are supposed to be valued. The local NBC affiliate in Utah, KSL, is trying to ban a TV show that starts this fall called The New Normal. It is about a gay couple trying to have a baby, and KSL claims that the show is too offensive.

I am absolutely outraged that the local NBC affiliate in Utah, KSL, is censoring a new TV show about a gay family.
A few weeks ago, I was watching the Olympics with my 8-year-old son when a promo came on NBC for a new TV show called "The New Normal." The show is about two gay men starting a family -- my son said the show looked good, and he was excited to watch it. I agreed; we love watching family shows together.
But our local NBC affiliate doesn't think it's okay to air a TV show that depicts a gay family. Personally, I don't think it's okay that a TV station owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is censoring network television.
I started a petition on Change.org demanding that KSL air "The New Normal" this fall. Click here to add your name.
I know how damaging discrimination like this can be. My cousin is gay, and he's a wonderful person. But after he came out, some people in our family ostracized him, and said they didn't want him around their children. This was so hurtful to him -- and to me.
Religious institutions have a right to their opinions, but as a mom, I don't want KSL teaching my son that a family with two dads or two moms is any less important than our family. And as an American, I don't think it's right that any religious body should get to censor network television.
We have the right to determine our own family values, and for me, that means love and acceptance.
I know that if enough people sign my petition, KSL's owners and NBC will see that people in Utah and all over America won't accept them censoring network television based on discrimination.
Click here to sign my petition to stop NBC's affiliate in Utah from censoring "The New Normal," a TV show about a gay family.
Thank you,
Angela McCarthy

The title is a bit misleading, since it's an NBC affiliate and not the actual network, but this is still really stupid.

Can you edit the title to Utah NBC Station refusing to...?
'The New Normal' is one of NBC's Top 3 headliners for the new season; they're pushing it hard. This is strictly the station's (which is owned by the Church of LDS) fault.
And the petition isn't going to change anything, sadly. I'm all for activism, but there's no swaying Mormon-run stations, orgs, businesses, etc. They're stuck in their ways. They banned 'The Playboy Club' too (although all stations should've banned it - for being freaking awful).

Should have read the whole thing instead of skim through it. Let's try again.
Doesn't this affiliate realize that there are other stations that show programs with gay lead characters? And that Modern Family (the show that The New Normal is ripping off) features a gay couple with a child?!
Ridiculous.

Clarified the title a bit more, hope it's still not misleading.
I know the petition won't change anything but it's always worth a try. It also garners attention which is always a positive benefit in these types of situations.

Thanks.
And I signed the petition (as I always will). Just being a realist. Have you ever seen the film '8: The Mormon Proposition?"
PS - 'The New Normal' is getting glowing reviews from critics.

Not surprising. I think they refused to air The Playboy Club too, which was also on NBC.

Are they the only Mormon-owned network in Salt Lake? Or are there others? Because I'd be REALLY intrigued by this if the FOX or ABC affiliates in SLC are Mormon-owned.

It is really surprising? It is Utah, one of the most conservative states in the country.

Hmmmmm. Unfortunate. At the same time, though, I wish this show didn't seem like NBC's take on "Modern Family". Points off for lacking originality.

also this show might end up being terrible, but Modern Family is a boring, cookie-cutter family sitcom - it just has two gay main characters. otherwise, it is beat by beat THE SAME dynamics & characters we've seen on TV for decades. I hate when people kiss its ass

And this show lifted an idea that was already on Modern Family and made it into the focus of the show.

Mormon-owned?
Is it a regular thing for religious institutions to own network affiliates? The idea is irksome.
