Luther's voice transcends just R&B. His voice is a musical GIFT. No other male vocalist could sing with such passion, conviction, and charisma. Luther Vandross will undoubtedly always be one of the best vocalists of all time. He became the vocal standard for ANY male soul singer. It's incomparable power. It's lush, and smooth tone. Luther Vandross's voice is truly a treasure.

At this point, on ATRL, what is there left to say about Christina, her voice, and how she uses it? Either you love it unconditionally, love it with reservations, or outright loathe it.
But only an unforgettable voice could inspire such diverse reactions.
I would say I appreciate Christina's voice with reservation. When she reigns it in, she can elevate a track to truly stirring excellence (I'm thinking of "Lift Me Up" and "You Lost Me" most recently). When she gives in to her worst, most self-gratifying tendencies, she can ruin just about any song or performance (e.g. her cover of "The Christmas Song" is unlistenable).
Christina is cool I guess. I don't have too many feelings about the women's list, I just want to see who came out on top.
Hmm.

Whether it's the muted anger of "Inner City Blues" or the passionate yearning of "Sexual Healing," Marvin was a master of making the listener captive to his voice and his message. Anyone who can sing a song as familiar as the Star Spangled Banner and make it sound like a soul classic is clearly a very special talent. ( @ this being twice as long as all the others)
I agree.

Man, Marvin Gaye defined pop - it's like watching a timeline of modern popular music by hearing everything he laid his voice on. There are no words to describe what made him special, but even at his darkest, there was a light in him that was audible.
