another example of where the system is failing; it's blocking legitimate uses of things that happen to have a certain set of letters in a row. Are there many cases of this? Ofc not. Is PCD not important enough though?
Honestly, I've never heard of a 10+ year old website only suddenly getting in trouble for something as innocuous as an abundance of swear words. You have to make sure you're not getting singled out; it sounds like they're trying to coax you into throwing money at the situation to make it go away.
Is there a way to avoid censorship in SYG and NHB if you password protect those threads? The content wouldn't be readily available and exposed unless you had the password which members could message a mod for if they wanted to enter/or there could be a simpler way. I remember forums I was on previously had this password protected feature. If this still wouldn't work then nevermind!
I have been on many forums such as worldofkj.com that do not impose any kind of censorship when it comes to swearing yet also have advertisements. Many comments sections in news websites also allow swearing and have advertisements. To be honest, in my 6 years of forum-navigating I have only encountered this problem here. Images I understand as there is a need to keep forums Safe for Work, but swearing should not be censored IMO.

The censorship is completely tolerable, especially if that's the one thing keeping the site running.
Just an idea: One of the mods said that they were able to see all the banned words, I guess something to do with the censor being lifted on their accounts? Something like that ...Anyway, well if it can be removed for moderators, wouldn't it also be possible to unlock the same things for normal users, so that we could see the words, but guests and advertisers couldn't? Just wondering if that's realistic.
Can someone just tell me if this is possible?
Because there ARE some features of the site that only members can see; Blogs, PMs and "Who's Browsing" being three of them. If the advertising people couldn't see any of the "banned" words, wouldn't there not be a problem?
Have we tried wordfilters? I think wordfilters are the best way. 4chan used to have them where certain words would just inexplicably change to other, completely unrelated words...but eventually everyone who actually used the site knew what they meant. It's pretty great because it makes it seem as if we're talking about unrelated things & you'll never have to deal with plain text vulgarities if you do it right.
The fact of the matter is there can be no posting of explicit content whatsoever - end of. It doesn't matter if we can see it but the public can't - it's still there and still driving away the Ads.
The censorship isn't bad, just maybe a little strict.
The censorship is okay, it will help with the advertising, we don't need those words.
Besides some of the guests don't/didn't sign up/visit anymore because of the cursing; do you
all think all people loved to see those kind of words left and right? no.
So the site could benefit not only from the ads, but from more visitors, new members, etc.
If the site grows on views/hits, it could get more money to maintain itself.
That may be a valid point but they again they use there own advertising networks. We arent big enough to do that, so until then we cannot set our own rules and have to follow the rules of our advertisers.
Too big not to go overlooked, but too small to overlook the rules. What a tough place to be.
I guess the censor will have to do for now. Is there a reason why it became a problem all of a sudden? Was it the increased traffic?
