It wasn't Starships per se, it's the way this era was handled in general. The damage didn't start with Starships. It started with Roman in Moscow and Stupid Ho. Think about it. Nicki's highest charting single this era has been Beez in Da Trap, right, but that's not what she released first. She released RIM and SH as buzz tracks, giving Stupid Ho a video. Both of those songs were weak, and that's what she was served to the urban audience to start the era. So, Nicki was getting the side-eye from Urban way before Starships. Now, that said, Starships was the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of her urban fans. It was bad enough that she paid them dust with those wack buzz tracks, but then she had the nerve to release a full on pop song after that? If not for Beez, I think urban would be done with her. I think that had she had released the Beez vid first, then followed that with Starships that her credibility with urban wouldn't have taken such a massive hit.

Urban audiences just didn't want to share her. Pop audiences didn't want to lose her. And Nicki wanted to have the best of both worlds, she just has to find a way to supply her split fanbase in an effective way.

No. The problem Nicki had was releasing Starships as the lead single with no strong Urban single. If you're going to release something like Starships that alienates your core fanbase then you have to release a song that completely caters to them and sticks in their mind. The whole "beach, each" **** is way too cutesy pop to release Beez In The Trap behind. She need some Roman's Revenge **** to slay.

However, I think Pound The Alarm would've been better received as a lead single.

And to that poster 2 above me, Roman In Moscow would've shat as a single with a Wayne feature, rather than RR.

I don't agree with that. I thought both songs were horrible. And then . . . there was that performance at the Grammy's. I think at that point, people were just scared. It just been a messy era. I think she can turn it around though for the next LP. I completely agree with what you were saying earlier. She can service two singles to radio simultaneously and cater to two different bases if both singles are strong.

It ruined her for me. I'm not an urban listener clearly by my signature, but I really loved Pink Friday. I *****d that album out. But then this came out and it took away the worst pop song of the decade so far title from Americano.
Roman Holiday and Reloaded were good, but she had already soiled the image in my mind.

She says the mixed genres of PF:RR come from her heart and represents who she is, rather than her previous work where she was told to be "one thing".

Roman In Moscow is a bop. And it fits the Roman persona. And the Grammy performance would've been miles better if she knew how to perform/dance.

I think she's achieved her goal with this era. If she can manage to scan a million copies and let the obvious singles smash then she has done enough with this era. If she hadn't done this and went the Pink Friday route again then people would've gotten tired of her.

Regardless of her kinda losing most of her urban fanbase, this type of era was much needed. Now she has a reason for people to want to hear her third album.

Radio is, not so much her. Her debut stuff was paid dust til Super Bass.
