International success = improvement in the national economy they're always whining about. Korea has the right idea; tourism over the past few years has skyrocketed thanks to the Korean Wave. They use it to promote the country. That's how it should be done tbh.
Japan wants to have their cake and eat it to, building an entire culture by throwing their own influences in a blender with Western ones, but going out of their way to deny the Westerners that they're constantly borrowing from the same privilege.
