early 70s to early 2000s is like 30 years.
Madonna maintained success from early 80s to early 10s (yes she's still successful). That's 30 years also..
Though that said, they are both legendary and both got numerous hit songs that will make their legacy last forever. But Madonna changed pop music in the 80s. She and Michael Jackson did.
You can clearly look at the singers pre-Madonna (Olivia Newton-John, Sheena Easton, Pat Benatar, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Dionne Warwick, Deborah Harry) and singers post-Madonna (Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue). Before Madonna the female singers were supposed to be "classy", they did some songs about sex but it was still very subtle. But after 1983 when Madonna & Cyndi Lauper both came to the music biz it all changed. Female singers after that used their sexuality more, they could it express it more. And name what female pop singers hasn't been influenced by Madonna? Like seriously.
