People procreate less when they reach better standards of living. If the population consists of too many old people, then that puts a strain on the economy. So if we eliminate our obsession with extending life as long as possible, then we accumulate more wealth and everyone is better off.

It would of course always be a choice. The wish to die is often an unspoken one because it's such a taboo. When it's no longer a taboo, the elderly will be more honest about their wish to have a peaceful and controlled ending, with no suffering.
