Very few people expected WA to do well on the charts due to the nature of the song. It's not about partying, dancing, clubs etc. Releasing it in the middle of the summer was a risk.

Somebody That I Used To Know isn't about partying, dancing, clubs etc.
Neither is Lights, Titanium, Too Close. I don't think those songs are risky, either.
And Katy is always going to have the upper hand because she's a well-known artist now.
Also, there's no need to be so defensive. I don't think Wide Awake is gloomy or sad.
