Since you're all so pressed about the "Iconic" usage, tell us, what does the word really means to you?

This is one word that a lot of people seem to "skew" or "mold" to fit their definition of legendary, but instead of just using that beautiful word legendary, of course ATRLerS like to take the other route and go for the word, "iconic" or "icon". Now, I find that the easiest way to understand the actual meaning of this word is to forget about how it relates to your queen, stanbase, and music in general. You will confuse yourself.

Iconic > Icon > Representation

So forgetting about music for just a minute, when I say "Internet Explorer "icon", what comes to your mind? If it's this...

then give yourself a pat on the back and a cookie to boot, because that means you are VERY close to understanding what the word "icon/ic" means. In fact you might subconsciously already know, but instead of playing on your minimal understanding you throw away any logic when your fave is added into the equation. But, basically an "icon" is an image or a symbol, something used to represent something else.

Example: RSS Feed Icons, oftentimes associated with blogs:

"Iconic" means the specifics of the icon or subject, topic, nature of the icon. Which is why most of the time there's something preceding the regular word, icon. '80s icon, Gay Icon, Fashion Icon. "Iconic" is just a way of encompassing the specific title without stating it. Big Hair. Iconic ('80s), Rainbow Flag. Iconic (Gay), Coco Chanel. Iconic (Fashion). When you think of icon/ic don't think of your fave's album sales or single success, think of their IMAGE and how it relates to something else. Ex, Madonna > Cone Bras > '80s > ICON. She's an '80s icon, a symbol of that time period. Simple. Really.

MEMORABLE =/= ICONIC.

An icon is easily recognizable. An icon represents/symbolizes something; something being a group of people, a period of time, a genre of music/film, the culture of a group of people, etc.

Examples of iconic things and people:

Iconic for American culture:

Iconic for ALL music videos, the MTV era and all modern Popular culture:

Iconic for 1980s Pop:

Iconic for the Teen Bubblegum Pop movement of the late 90s/early 00s and all Teen Pop culture:

Iconic for 2000s Pop culture:

Iconic Black Female Performers

Iconic for the American Civil Rights Movement:

Iconic for Michael Jackson and his career:

Iconic for Marilyn Monroe, Hollywood and American female celebrities:

To me Iconic is an overused word that should be banned from the surface of ATRL for the remainder of time.

What does it mean to me? Something that represents someone or something in a memorable way, hence the word ICON. An icon is a symbol.

Ie.

Silver Glove and Black Shoes: Michael Jackson.
Cone Bra: Madonna.
Hair Bow: Gaga.
Lightning Bolt: David Bowie.
Curly Blonde, Short Tresses: Marilyn Monroe. (This is open for discussion).

An icon to me is someone who makes an impact on culture; someone who is looked up to and admired and is not afraid to be who they are and don't limit they're creativity.

Someone who is memorable because of they're art, they craft and image. But most importantly, their raw talent.
