It sends mixed messages when you spend an entire era devoting yourself to telling your fans that they should accept themselves the way they are, God makes no mistakes, etc.
And then making such cosmetic changes to feel better about your image implies that being Born This Way really wasn't all that she said it was. I can see why some would be upset.
To be honest though, I don't personally see it that way, but I understand why others might.
