I was actually gonna say this earlier. The Script has always been pretty poppy. Their style is alternative rock I guess, but their music has always been catchy and poppy enough to make it onto radio. Same thing with Maroon 5 to some extent, but I think what people are afraid of is that they will go the route of standard Top 40 pop and lose some of what makes them special, like Overexposed.
If the rest of the album is like this though, it shouldn't be nearly as drastic of a change. I agree that it sounds more like One Republic than Maroon 5.

Thank you for responding in a reasonable way with this comment instead of trying to attack me for having an opinion about all of this "going pop" business people get up in arms about. (I mean that genuinely haha

) The Script is pop/rock at its most straightforward, and even though I'm not crazy about this song, it's actually not a huge departure from their normal sound even with Will's involvement. Either way, I think people just need to be more specific about their fears over their fave pop/rock bands not necessarily going "pop", but rather going dance-pop, because at the end of the day these bands have always made music for pop radio. None of these artists have ever really taken their music to the left field of the rock spectrum, so even when they do get a little more straightforward with the pop influences, it just is shocking to me when people act like it's such an outlandish musical gesture. "Breakeven" is a damn catchy pop song when all is said and done and bless them for writing that! There's nothing wrong with embracing a good hook sometimes.
