Ok so I am going to be randomly assigned a roommate, because I have no male friends going to my college. I am kinda worried that my roommate won't be gay friendly. I'm not exactly good at hiding it. If it does back fire on me, my "dorm" is more of an apartment, so I will still have privacy.

My aunt was talking to me about roommates and she said "just hope he's not gay, because my husband had a gay roommate, and it was awful" Grant they're in their 60s.

Also, there was a personality survey I took, and it asked your favorite type of music. I said top 40 (pop). How many homophobic people listen to pop? At the bottom of it, it said "we make all decisions regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, national identify, etc and we reject all requests to change because of these reasons. They would probably make an exception if my safety was on danger, but not if we just feel awkward. Which is what I am worried about.

To those that did have straight roommates, did you ever feel comfortable enough to bring a guy over?

My first year at college, I was really nervous about this same issue. I was worried he would be anti-gay, as he called everything 'gay' and was conservative.

Still, we hung out. My friends became his friends, and he would ask them if I was gay. Once he found out, nothing changed. He was definitely a terrific roommate and looked out for me! He fledged a frat, and that boosted my friends too. I even got into parties for free. We ended up being great friends!

I wouldn't worry too much, you never know. If your roommate is a homophobic dick towards you, request a room change if possible.

If your roommate is homophobic, complain to your RA and you can probably get a room change.

This is basically all you need to do. Most colleges are fairly liberal and people would understand.

I started college 3 weeks ago, and my roommates have given me no trouble. Granted, I don't really hang out/talk to them. But most guys don't really care, and if they do, they might be scared of some good ****.

I don't know. Homophobia runs deep in college, but not as much in high school. You are dealing with people who are either maturer or becoming mature, and you probably won't even see your roommate as much considering you guys may have a different group of friends and classes. I never had to live in a dorm, so I wouldn't know how it is. I just have an idea that this might be the case.

Most colleges and universities ask you to take a short survey about yourself before you are assigned a roommate.. did you take something like this?

If yes, then they should have paired you with someone who who is "gay friendly" or someone whose views are not in opposition to homosexuality.

If you didn't take something like this, then you should consider contacting the housing department and voicing your concerns to them and see what they say.

Worst case scenario is that your roommate is NOT cool with your situation, and then you can tell the housing department that you need to be placed in a different dorm. They won't force you to stay with someone who makes you feel uncomfortable.

It all comes down to if the college is gay-friendly. But tbh jut be you, if i was straight i'd rather have a gay roomie than a lazy, messy, obnoxious douche

Unless it's an über-religious school (BYU, Notre Dame, etc.), I'm sure you'll be fine; if you need to switch roommates, you'll be able to do so.

I was not out to my freshman year roommate (he was fairly conservative and gave me the impression as I got to know him better that he was not LGBT friendly). But he was a fine roommate, we just never became friends. I was rarely in my room due to travel on weekends.

Like others have said, if it ends up being an issue (let's hope it isn't!), you can always request a roommate change. But i hope you end up with a good roommate!

2 of my suitemates were gay and the other 5 were pretty tolerant. Even my roommate, who was very Christian.

I wasn't worried about it. My roommate was actually more feminine than I could ever be. He had all the seasons of The Hills and The Simple Life on DVD. He was surprised when I told him I was gay. People would actually call him gay. He was just a really fashionable, artsy guy. He loved smoking weed and so did I. My friends and his friends got along perfectly. I couldn't have asked for a better roommate.

You can always request a roommate change if he's a dick.

There's nothing to worry about, hun. If there is a problem and you feel your safety is in jeopardy, I'm pretty sure the school will have to move you into a different dorm/apartment. Unless you live in a predominantly homophobic area, you should be fine.

I'm moving to a new dorm as well, and this is exactly what I am afraid of.
