Season 8 will air during the 2012-2013 television season (September 2012 to May 2013). Producers have mentioned that this may be the last season due to actors' contracts. They have worked out two plotlines, one that would wrap everything up in the upcoming season and an alternative that would extend the storyline to the ninth season.

To be honest, as much as I want to prolong How I Met Your Mother, it has been on air long enough and extending it to season 9 would be overkill. It was a nice run and I hope that this season would be the best one ever, since the scene where Barney is the groom has been going on for like 3 seasons already.
But good job, producers, cast and everyone involved for this wonderful show. One of the very few amazing shows of TV this past years.
