Wrong.
It was vaguely inspired by a fanfic that Cassandra wrote. But the stories aren't remotely the same. Some of the dialogue is.
People need to relax. Being inspired by a story off a fanfic you wrote isn't a bad thing. It's basically taking a piece of writing that YOU worked on, and did something interesting with it. She didn't steal from anyone. And it's not like she even published the same fanfic except changed the character names like the author of Fifty Shades did. She wrote a six book series that has close to nothing to do with her original fic. And she even wrote a prequel trilogy even more different and is working on a sequel trilogy that is even MORE different.
The bottom line is: The Mortal Instruments is absolutely nothing like Harry Potter in the slightest except for the fact that there are Gothic, supernatural elements. Cassandra Clare didn't steal her ideas from anyone except herself, and she changed the story completely while just using a few sentences from something else SHE WROTE. The Mortal Instruments is 100% hers.
