Apparently Tommy Mottola (Mariah's ex-husband) tried using J.Lo to ruin Mariah's career during her breakdown. He hired one of Mariah's closest writers for Jenny, and gave Jenny rejected Mariah uptempos, using the same tactics to push J.Lo/Ja Rule remixes to #1. All that stuff.
Mimi wasn't too fond of Jenny, I still don't think she knows ha though.
... And Tommy stole the original sampling that was to be used for Loverboy and used it on a Jenny song (I'm Real). Since J. Lo's album was gonna be released first, Mariah couldn't do anything about it.
Throughout 2000, Carey had already been writing and recording material for Glitter.[41] During this period, she developed the concept for the album's lead single, "Loverboy". Originally, Carey had sampled the melody and hook from the 1978 Yellow Magic Orchestra song "Firecracker", using an interpolation of it throughout the chorus and introduction.[41] In early theatrical trailers for Glitter, the original version of "Loverboy" was still featured. As Carey had ended her contract with Columbia Records, Jennifer Lopez was signed by Tommy Mottola, and had begun recording material for her album, J.Lo (2001).[41] According to The Inc.'s Irv Gotti, Mottola, head of Columbia and Carey's ex-husband, knew of Carey's usage of the "Firecracker" sample, and attempted to have Lopez use the same sample before her.[41] At the time, Carey had become increasingly paranoid over outside executives being informed about Glitter, especially following news of Lopez's "theft" of the song.[41] When the music publisher's for "Firecracker" were questioned, they admitted Carey had licensed usage of the sample first, and Lopez had signed for it over one month later, under Mottola's arrangement.[42] Following the scandal, Carey was not able to use the original sample, as Lopez's album was to be released far earlier than Glitter.[42] She subsequently changed the composition of "Loverboy", and incorporated a new sample, "Candy" by Cameo.[42] According to Gotti, Mottola contacted him with instructions to create an additional song that sounded exactly like another Glitter track he produced, titled "If We" featuring rappers Ja Rule and Nate Dogg.[42] The "Firecracker" sample was eventually used by Lopez on her song "I'm Real", from her album J.Lo.[42]
most interesting is the two performances by whitney and by mariah that same night at the 1991 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS
Whitney performed "im your real baby tonight"/"my name is not Mariah"/"who do you love most between Me and Mariah?"
and Mariah performed "someday i'm gonna be preaching for my voice back"
at that time everybody thought Mariah's voice was just so much more powerful which is partially true in fact, mariah's voice is not more powerful but has more range and is more ecclectic
but then whitney hit it very hard, after the kind of dissapointing album "i'm your baby tonight" (which produces very weak hits, apart from "i'm your baby tonight" and "all the man that i need", the lable released very weak singles like "my name is not susan" or "we didn't know" a duet with stevie wonder... compared to the amazing singles from Mariah Carey ... clearly mariah hit it hard and surpasses whitney
but then whitney hit it back very hard with THE BODYGUARD and showed the world her superiority !!
but Mariah didn't let that bodyguard thing impress her she came back as well and produced "one sweet day" and stayed 16 weeks on top of the billboard chart !
the people in the industry were clearly siding for whitney and they punished mariah by giving her NO grammy awards despite all the nominations...

Sigh...I don't believe. Whitney publicly commented on not being pleased and not having a care in the world for mariah back in her 1990 interviews. Whitney does not seem like the person to be embarassed for that reason. Especially in the 80s and 90s where she reportedly didn't speak to some of the down to earth celebs. Whitney was not pleased with.mariah because when mariah came out Whitney was going downhill. Her two albums in the 80s went 13x and 9x platinum. Towards the end of the 80s she was getting flack for being too white...WHITEney is what they called her. She even got hoped by her people at an urban show. The media created the beef because mariah was the only person that could hold a candle to Whitney. She had more range, she wrote her own songs and she was more attractive...and let's just say more commercial looking. Her I'm your baby tonight album....which.I. love didn't hit #1 went 4x platinum...steep drop from its predecessors while mariahs debut spawned 4 #1s and went 9x platinum.
Whitney was threatened because mariah obviously was more accessible and more talented although Whitney owned the stage and command everyone with her vocals. Mariah was nervous meeting her in the mid 90s because of the shade Whitney always threw at her. Not the other way around. But when the bodyguard came out she shut the competition down and no longer was threatened.
All that said, it stood they didn't go tupac and biggie and get.too caught up in the hype and became friends.

So basically you have no reason to believe the story other than the fact that you've combined record sales stats and career criticisms with your own opinions, including one that "Whitney was threatened?"

Why would Bebe Winans lie about that? He was one of her closest friends, and what would be the part of fabricating a story of how she met Mariah when that wasn't the focus of the book? He gave a very detailed story of what happened lol
Whitney always gave Mariah compliments when asked about her repeatedly in interviews. She didn't call Mariah "reductive" or say she can't sing, she gave her the credit she deserved.
