The transparent nature of Taylor's "revenge tune" songwriting is as much an incidental thing as it is some shameful attempt to humiliate/
bully the famous assholes she's dated. The thinly-veiled references to Joe Jonas and John Mayer may be considered tactless or exploitative, but given the much-publicized nature of her relationships with these men, any major attempt on Taylor's part to disguise the source material would be futile. We are already too familiar with the content for any sense of mystery to be manufactured. The perpetual teenager's (actual age: 22) short-lived fling with Lispy McCowtongue was quite the scandal. Taylor's six seconds of fun with Jake Gyllenhaal provided more tabloid fodder than 10+ years of romance between Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift were a match made in tweenage heaven, or so we were repeatedly told by E! News. The bulk of Taylor's relationship experience stems from her time spent in the arms of various famous dudes. I suppose we could ask that, out of respect to her high profile ex-boyfriends, she not draw inspiration from her well of relationship misadventures with male celebs. Then again, we'd never expect
Justin Timberlake or
Eminem to be that respectful. In fact, we'd celebrate their bold and revealing songwriting.
I guess I'm confused. Was Taylor, this girl who is so frequently lauded for her "personal songwriting," supposed to purge John's name from her
old-man-tried-to-corrupt-this-chaste-young-girl anthem, and on top of that, flatly deny any connection between the song and its obvious target? Would it even be possible to craft a cryptic account of such a specific and noteworthy relationship? The inclusion of John's name only reveals what we would still be able to surmise from a completely bowdlerized version of the same track.
