That's kinda self-shading on Katy's part then. As an artist promoting a concert movie like that, wouldn't you want to get the general public to watch your movie? Isn't that the selling point, to make people care about her life? Based on the reviews, it seems that the movie only shows what dedicated fans already know. If I'm not a Katy fan, the movie was SUPPOSED to make me a fan. But the masses are going.
That and it proves she has a small fan base after all.

I don't understand why Paramount didn't factor in that she isn't anywhere as big as Bieber and Hannah Montanna.
With all the hype and promo, that budge probably skyrocketed.

I brought my little sister to see it.
Before the movie she could care less about KP. Now she's a casual fan.

What? The movie has gotten excellent reviews, and near critical acclaim for its projection on Katy's life. How would a KATY PERRY film not be for KATY PERRY fans? Other 3D concert films like Never Say Never, Best of Both Worlds Concert, and This Is It had a way bigger followings than Katy does right now. Of course their opening numbers would be bigger since they were more popular. Nobody but the fans were going to see those films, just like the same reason could be applied to Katy. It's not self shading if I know where my fav stands in the world. It would be delusional for me to expect it to open with like $30m+. And if you read the article and other sources provided in this thread instead of just running in here to post ignorance, you would know that the movie is expected to make back its budget in its opening weekend.
But I'm curious to know, what numbers were you expecting?

I don't think those numbers are that bad As people already said, it was a Thursday release, a lot of competition and a smaller stan base than the other artists with 3D movies. The great thing is that this actually is selling albums, TD:TCC is already Top 5 on itunes. So, Katy is still winning

Not exactly, a $12M production budget + $10M - $20M marketing budget means that the movie needs at least $50M to break even on box-office alone. However, I think the movie will do well on DVD market to cover it's budgets.
And prediction from boxoffice.com
Quote:
Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D will likely end up closer to the $19 million domestic haul of Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience than the $73 million gross of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Even though Part of Me represents a nice bit of counter-programming, the market is just too crowed right now. Still, teenage girls will appreciate an alternative to the explosions and fights found in TASM.
Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D should take in $12.5 million from Thursday-Sunday.

The actual movie cost 2 million to make. The marketing budget was an addtional 10 million making a total of 12 million.

It said it will be closer to 20M compared to 75M, that doesn't mean it will gross 20M. your logic is just. It will likely make more than 50M in NA alone.

This.
I also think the movie will have legs, just because movies have A LOT more longevity during summer.

I didn't say it would only make $20M
However, It may not even get close to $35M because Ice Age will consume its 3D screens and TA.
As concert movies are extremely front loaded, figer-crossed for your prediction.
Ps. Talking about logic, isn't $50M closer to $73M?

Not surprising. The movie and her persona are not attractive or interesting at all. Andof course her fan base is not that big. It will go down fall very soon.
The only interesting thing about the movie is the candy life of Katy Perry.

Never expected this to be a hit, at all, so its success or lack thereof was expected.

Yes a Katy perry movie IS for Katy Perry fans but unless she has a massive following like Justin Bieber (which clearly, nobody believes), then Paramount is taking a gamble on funding an expensive project like this if it were only for fans. Why not release it on DVD, where it would be less money to fund? It'd probably do better with DVD sales. Saying it's "For the fans" and then other people of your stanbase saying "well, she doesn't have a big fan base, what do you expect" seems to set up this movie for failure. These kinds of "for the fans" thing only works if you have a massive following and you can appeal to the general public enough.
Your "research" and pointing out the positive reviews is moot - that wasn't my point at all. I never stated that the critics were slamming it or discouraging the public - I merely stated that they're not doing much to lure the general public. They're praising the movie highly with the mindset that this is for fans and for younger kids. Not all, but some. Few glowing reviews are making their case for the masses. I'm glad you're using articles to argue, but do it correctly, not to beat around a non-existent point.
I expected this movie to gross big as hell numbers, given the promotion, the hype, the ticket giveaway (from Amazon) and the fact that she has five #1s, the only female to accomplish this.

Mess @ you taking an hour to reply. Releasing it to theaters was a smart tactic of them to cash in on Katy's peak. Of course they wouldn't just release something to DVD when they can get a lot more money from a theater release, and the plus of her being so popular. However, she is not as popular as say Hannah Montana or Justin Bieber and her numbers for this opening weekend show that. But you've still failed to see the logic of this is a Katy film, it's for the Katy fans. If she wanted the general public, non fans, and all that nonsense to go see her movie she wouldn't have marketed it as a 3D concert film. If you didn't know, these 3D concert films are usually released for the FANS that weren't able to see their fav live. Hannah Montana and the Michael Jackson movie were adamant of this and were marketed as so. A documentary on MTV about Katy would've been done if she wanted non-fans and the bigger mass of the general public to take interest in her personal life.
Secondly, I'm finding it very hypocritical and backtracking of some of you guys to claim that "Katy has 5 #1s, only female to do this, she should have bigger numbers." "Katy is a WW superstar, she sold 5m+ albums and so many singles. I expected more" Then turn around and discredit those achievements as nothing and claim her to be a flash in the pan and non-interesting. Stick to one script. How can you guys expect her to have big opening numbers, but discredit all her success in a different thread. Maybe you haven't done it, but most likely a general mass of the people in this thread have.
And once again, you've clearly missed the last part of my paragraph that said the movie is projected to make back its budget in its opening weekend. And there's still the rest of the summer to go. If that's not good, then what numbers were you expecting? If she's projected to make around 12-19 million, that's pretty good. Especially with all the recent competition set by Brave, Madagascar 3, Spiderman, Ted, and Magic Mike.
