Because being against gay marriage is safer.
I'd bet that a good chunk of that 54% that voted in favor would vote for a politician regardless of that politician's view on gay marriage. Take, for example, republicans who personally have no issue with gay marriage — they're still going to vote for a republican candidate who most likely is against gay marriage. So if you're already going to get their vote, then it also makes sense to secure the vote of the 42% who are against gay marriage as well by being against it.
