Simon Cowell would like to see a Canadian version of The X Factor.
At the very least, he’d like Canadians to be eligible to compete on the U.S version of the reality singing show.
The TV and record company mogul was in Toronto Tuesday on a promotional visit for the American X Factor, which airs on CTV. But he also told reporters he was there to boost the confidence of the local broadcaster in homegrown talent.
“I don’t believe this attitude of we’re a smaller country, therefore we can’t compete with the U.K. or America. It’s nonsense,” Cowell said.
“What’s in my mind is either we join X Factor up so we can have Canadian contestants, which I think would make sense, or if I could persuade the broadcaster and, more importantly, if we could find the right team, who I really trust, who gets what’s going on in the market now, to say ‘I’ll find you the talent.’ . . . And I’m determined to do that.
“You look at what’s happening in the charts over the last 10 or 20 years; you look at the Canadian talent that’s happened, you’d be crazy not to try and do something.”
The U.S. show returns Sept. 12 for its second season.
