No, it's a very exclusive group. It's really rare for someone to be commercial and critically acclaimed. Of course, no matter the material in the next album, I'm sure they are ultimately looking at the persons entire discography and deciding if they are an "embarrassment to the committee"

Bigger competition and less categories in the '80s and '90s.

Lauryn Hill set a record for the most wins in one night by a female artist, and that was in 1999.

Also, the academy was different back then. The blue ribbon panel wasn't formed until 1995.

Mariah, to my knowledge, has never been critically acclaimed.

Maybe because some of their music lacks substance or innovation But Grammys don't mean that much, they're flubbed anyway

Their 90s work (all three of them), and Janet's 80s work, had depth, substance and innovation.

Madonna was too "Pop" for the Grammys in her early career, and they didn't want to know about her from Papa Don't Preach to Bedtime Stories (way too much controversy). They opened their eyes for Ray of Light, and Music just had bad luck. But then she did the American Life video, and much like American radio and the LaP to BS days, they have awarded her very little since then.

Stupid ****ing Grammys. And they'll turn around and give the ****ing Lifetime Achievement by the end of this decade - you just watch, people.

Janet from '86 to '97, and Madonna from '82 to '07, lacked substance and innovation?

The people they lost to deserved to win most of the time, you gotta look at the other nominees.

Most of them were losing to Whitney or Michael.

I think Madonna deserved at least two Grammys, one for Papa Don't Preach and one for Like A Prayer. They were right to skip Erotica and Bedtime Stories (even though I love both CDs) though

And you might want to edit your first post. Madonna never won a Grammy for "4 Minutes."

Idk but Cher has been snubbed plenty of times too and it wasn't until Believe that she won her first Grammy and it was for Dance Recording. I don't really mind though because the Grammys love Gaga.

I think pop music back then wasn't really respected as much as it is now though. The requirements are all over the place, they're very unpredictable, you'd think it's because Madonna and Janet aren't vocalists, but Mariah is. You'd think it'd be critical acclaim but 4 was snubbed and Teenage Dream was nominated. It's weird.

Mariah was only really snubbed in 1996 when she was up for six awards. I would have given her at least two of those awards she was up for.

It's not fair though because if Control had been Janet's first album, she would easily have won it.
