I wish yall would stop downplaying Janet's influence. Janet's music is rooted in RNB. She crossed over to the mainstream because she made RNB popular. Once Janet broke through, that led to her imitators trying to get a slice of the pie. When you listen to "Control" or "RN", those are RNB albums. Janet just happened to crossover and influenced a generation.

Even Madonna and Michael had to get on the contemporary sound of R&B that Janet has popularized in the late 80s that was the segue into the sound of the 90s.
