Britney was banned on radio from I'm A Slave 4U until Toxic. Me Against The Music fell into that timeframe.

Back in 2003 digital sales didn't exist and physical single sales were dead. So the only way your song could chart is by having radio support.

Madonna didn't have any radio support (and still doesn't) after American Life and Britney was banned between Slave and Toxic as I already mentioned. 0 chance basically. I'm surprised it managed Top 40.

It was a worldwide smash though with 5 weeks at #1 on WW chart.








Had it been released in digital age, it'd debut at #1 based on their names alone and get much more radio support.

Now the song itself is not particularly amazing, but it still did amazing WW probably on their names alone.

Brit was coming from a blacklisted era and Madonna from a flop era, maybe that had something to do with it. The song is hot and they looks amazing!

Because it isn't memorable. It has no hook. Plus: it's way too pop. US radio played mostly urban music and Britney was not urban. It can be said too that US radio was over Madge because of the ''American Life'' incident but I'm not too sure.

Long Story. I'm sure someone could explain in detail, but in short:

She chose 1 tour operator over another and that another one was Clear Channel that owned even more radio stations in US than they do now, so in retaliation they banned (blacklisted) Britney on all the stations that they owned and no DJ was allowed to play her songs.

So instead of charting on 100 Pop stations, she'd only chart on like 10-15 because she was banned on the rest. You can't get much AI from that, and no digital sales existed, hence the low chart positions
