When we were younger, most of us were told that the Boogeyman (or Bogeyman) was either under the bed, in the closest, or some dark spot in our bedrooms. No one ever really said what he looked like, tho. They just said "Boogeyman" and you became scared of something you never even saw before.

In a sense, the dark was the Boogeyman to me. While I was still scared that something or someone was lurking in it, I was frightened more by the dark. Maybe it's because you can't see in it or see what's in it, but there was something about it that scared the **** out of me. You just don't know what's in it... The unknown scares, mystifies, and attracts people.

Anyway, I always thought putting the blanket over my head would keep him away from me. Out of habit, I still do it to this very day. Sometimes I can't even sleep without my head under the blanket. It's more of a comfort thing now, tho.

So, how did you imagine him to look or what was the Boogeyman to you?

I always pictured The Boogeyman as being Michael Myers. Maybe because it's his nickname and I first saw Halloween when I was 2-3 years old and was frightened throughout my entire childhood by it.

I'm the same way, though, with darkness. I refuse to enter a dark room. I always have to have lights on. Maybe it's because I'm afraid someone is going to kill me, or maybe it's just the darkness itself. I don't know. But I cannot sleep in the dark. Atleast not alone.

I even cover my head to go to sleep sometimes.. Darkness is one of my most deep fears.

I feel like when I can't see where I'm going / what I'm looking at that I lose control of my own awareness. I don't like that feeling.

I was never afraid of the Boogeyman, or any sort of thing like that, or the dark.

Just of death. That's the only thing that scared me as a child. That one day it will all be over and i wouldn't know it. I couldn't imagine that sense of nothingness.

I would stay up for hours and hours thinking and crying about it. I would try to imagine the nothingness and think about before I was born, the fact that that the whole world and all of history happened without me. And the segment I would see would be so miniscule and end, and the world would go on without me.

That's all I thought about, at a really, really young age. No bogeyman could scare me.

Same here. If I'm home alone and get ready to go to sleep, I make sure that each room is properly lit for myself to see where I'm going.

I even have white Christmas lights in my room so it makes me more comfortable to go to sleep.

Michael (The Boogeyman, The Shape or what have you) and Freddy were the two that I pictured as the Boogeyman a lot, but for two different reasons; one can get you while you're awake and the other while you're dreaming (well, Michael can whoop that ass while you're sleeping, but you know what I mean). The dark was a lot stronger than those two, tho. It's so intimidating.

People think being scared of the dark is dumb, but the reasons you stated are more than enough to strike fear in someone. I don't play that. I turn my phone's light all the way up upon entering the house at night. I'm not getting beat down, stabbed, or whatever else in the dark.

Yes, it's a very disorienting experience. You can't control it either, which makes it scarier.

I always had this recurring nightmare of this mummy-vampire hybrid that would come out from underneath my bed and suck my blood, so it was mostly that. Other times it was the axe-crazy sailor from my other recurring nightmare. Other times it was the pastor from my recurring church services.

Growing up as a child, I would always sleep in my mum's bed because I knew she could always keep my safe from any danger. It was only two years ago I finally managed to sleep on my own, but that's with a light shining into my room from the room next to me.

I remember two years ago my parents forced me to sleep in my room, they would yell and scream at me because I was too scared to sleep by myself in the darkness of my own room, and I hated them for it. I always slept on the floor of my sister's room since my mum died because she was another person I trusted (not anymore). I just remember crying and crying and yelling at them back explaining my fear of the dark. They had no idea how much the darkness scared me though, so they would just continue harassing me until they went away. They had NO idea how much darkness scared me.

Anyways, all these paranormal and mythical creatures I've acknowledged in my life have an impact on my fear of the dark, Like, I don't really believe in these creatures at all, although being in the dark by myself encourages me to believe it because they're all I can think of when I do try to sleep in my own room by myself. I know I'm too old to be scared of the dark, but whatever.

My town (and surrounding areas) had/has its share of those. I guess I never paid any attention to that because I never encountered one.

Darkness was something I encountered every night. I guess it was psychological fear.

Boogyman did'nt really get me like that. I was scared of Bloody Mary when I was kid. I couldn't sleep with mirrors in room and till this day I still don't sleep with mirrors , in the dark.
