What happened to Rock? (Billboard Hot 100)
Well, do you remember what was the last rock single #1 on Billboard Hot 100?
This:
December 22 2001 How You Remind Me - Nickelback
December 29 2001 How You Remind Me - Nickelback
January 5 2002 How You Remind Me - Nickelback
January 12 2002 How You Remind Me - Nickelback
In 2001 we also had Crazy Town, and in 2002, Creed.
FIVE years ago. We spent 5 years without a rock #1. Till then we had songs like "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" by Green Day, but it only reached Peak 2.
Do you think this year we will have a rock band reaching the #1 again? Or is rock dead in the US?

Just to remember u. This year we'll have: Radiohead, Chris Cornell, Courtney Love, Eagles , Guns N' Roses (who knows?), Linkin Park, Silverchair, Smashing Pumpkins, Stooges, Velvet Revolver, Green Day, Good Charlotte, and many other huge bands...

Well out of the bands you named only Linkin Park, Velvet Revolver, Green Day [back already?], and GC will come close to #1, but R&B/HH has officially taken over and I think for good because we've been through the rock era, rap era, pop era, now it's R&B/HH for good. Everyone is producing something with a rapper, even if it's pop. So... I'm not a HUGE rock fan, but I do feel what you're saying.

Hm, what do you think that was the rock era? 90's with Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam? I agree with you ^__^, but don't you think it would be better if we vary? It's a shame 5 years without a rock #1 (and we cannot say Nickelback was a nice #1 , but anyway).

i feel, that rock is not dead. Yet. But is is a dying breed, and the hip-hop industry is taking over. Probably for now. Or, forever. Sorry, St. Jimmy

Green Day won't hit number one. They've already had BOBD, they won't have another song that big so soon. Linkin Park's style is said to not be something that would do great on the Hot 100. Good Charlotte aren't rock (aren't pop either) but aren't a band to be considered full rock.
If any band will hit 1 it will be Lifehouse. And if a new song by them is as good as You And Me then it can happen

I'd say the 80s - mid 90s were the rock times. 1996 came around and we got Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, all the other gay pop boy bands, then 1999 you got Brit, Xtina, Jess, etc. so it kind of died out.

The hot 100 a biased chart. I don't think rap is as popular as it indicates, especially back in 2004, those charts were nothing but a joke. I read they messed with the airplay formula around 2003 and since then the charts have been very messed up.

Rock is obviously not dead. I'll point you to the near-dozen rock albums that debuted at #1. The Billboard Hot 100 simply samples more R&B stations for its chart. So as shown every week, the majority of the chart is hip hop or rap leaning.
The best chance a rock act has with reaching the summit of the new Hot 100 is for a huge crossover artist (Aerosmith, Green Day, etc.) to put out a single before an album is released. Then all of the downloads would give it a shot.
And Creed never hit #1 in 2002, or at all this decade if I remember correctly.

They're doing better on albums this year with Red Hot Chili Peppers, AFI, Incubus, Evanescence, Godsmack, and Tool.
You're right about the Hot 100 though. Not 1 rock single since Nickelback.

It's like Nas says, 'hip hop is dead' or at least true hip-hop. Nowadays we have crap like Akon and Yung Joc along with most of these crappy rappers. The only good rappers are veterans like Nas and Jay-Z.
Rock needs to be saved! Hip-hop blows these days!

yes sorry I was wrong. It was not in 2002. They reached the #1 in Nov 11 2000, "With Arms Wide Open".

Hoobastank, Linkin Park, Green Day--among others--all could've hit #1. Every time a rock band gets to #2, they stall. We need good rock though, but God knows we'll never see Deftones, Korn, 311 or Tool anywhere near the top 20.

Why not just say hip-hop and r&b in general is extremely overrated? Isn't it odd that since 9/11/01, there has only been 1 #1 rock song and yet like 35-40 r&b/hip-hop/rap #1's?
