No, the entire mainstream is slowly becoming less dance pop. There were a lot of popular adult contemporary singers back then. Bruno Mars, etc.
Pure Dance pop has never done well on the radio, either. There are very little radio formats that support it. Katy Perry and Rihanna appeal to an HAC/AC and rhythmic/urban audience. Songs like Marry The Night will never crossover to HAC/AC and rhythmic/urban. You And I can at least get AC and Top 40 plays.
The only reason The Edge of Glory was so successful was because of it's heavy AC airplay.
